Nutrition for Kids: Diet to Keep Your Kids Healthy in 2022

Most kids and families in cities follow a very hectic schedule. Due to this, it is hard for them to prepare and enjoy homemade meals every day. Therefore, kids' diets also have more junk food. But such food sources are unhealthy and may hurt their health in the long run. Unhealthy eating often leads to issues in adulthood. It may even lead to lifelong diseases.

Healthy eating has several benefits for kids, such as:

  • Improving their minds
  • Stabilizing energy
  • Maintaining healthy weight
  • Preventing mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression and ADHD

Therefore, focusing on a healthy diet full of nutrition is vital. It prevents kids from the onset of diseases. If necessary, you may even provide nutrition powder for kids to fulfil their nutrition requirements.

Understand Your Kids’ Eating Habits

Even before your children learn to talk, they will use movement or sounds to indicate fullness or hunger.

Your child may be hungry if he/she:

  • Opens mouth when offered food
  • Gets excited about seeing food
  • Points to or try to reach out for food
  • Makes hand motions or sounds for indicating that he/she is hungry

Your child may be full when he/she:

  • Pushes food away
  • Turns heads away from food
  • Keeps mouth closed while offering food
  • Makes hand motions or sounds to indicate they are full

Generally, newborns have innate preferences for sweets. But as they start growing, their sense of taste starts developing and they learn to appreciate more flavours and tastes. Many kids are often picky eaters at some point in their childhood.

So, they like to eat the same food unless getting bored with it. It depends on parents how they provide various types of healthy foods to kids and help them make flexible food choices.

Tips for Forming Healthy Eating Habits

Here are certain tips to encourage healthy eating habits in kids:

1. Introduce Various Food Groups Containing Different Shapes, Colours, Tastes and Textures

You may try making your kids’ eating plates more colourful with foods like:

  • Cooked vegetables including green peas, carrots, spinach or potatoes
  • Fruits like bananas, pears, oranges, strawberries or melons
  • Whole grains like rice, chapati, pasta or bread
  • Eggs, fish or chicken
  • Curd or cheese

2. Let Them Feed Themselves

Once your children get hang of eating, make them feed themselves. You may even encourage them to eat without force-feeding. Just let them have what’s on their plate and decide how much they want it. This enables them to identify their internal cues of fullness and hunger.

3. Have Family Meals

When your kids watch your family have healthy meals and enjoy their mealtimes, it will encourage them to eat much better. It also provides nutritious home-cooked meals instead of junk food. Also, say no to electronic devices on the dining table.

4. Do Not Overfeed

It is best to serve small portions. If they finish one portion, you may offer more.

5. Give nutrition Powder if Necessary

If you feel your kids’ daily nutrition needs are not getting fulfilled, you may start providing nutrition powder for babies, teens or adolescents as per their age. It is best to consult a paediatrician before giving them any supplement or nutrition powder.

Conclusion

Healthy eating habits will always stay with your child if you also follow the same. So, do try to inculcate the given tips in their routine diet. It will prevent them from unhealthy eating habits and encourage them to have a more healthy, nutrition-rich diet.
